## Article

The FBI has successfully seized domains associated with NightmareStresser, a notorious DDoS-for-hire service. This action represents a significant blow to one of the longest-running platforms that enabled users to launch distributed denial-of-service attacks against various targets worldwide. By taking control of nightmare-stresser.com and nightmarestresser.org, authorities have effectively disrupted a service that facilitated hundreds of thousands of DDoS attacks globally since 2022. These platforms, known in the industry as 'booters' or 'stressers', often masquerade as legitimate network testing tools but provide users with the infrastructure to overwhelm targets with illegitimate traffic.

The impact of such services is far-reaching, affecting educational institutions, government agencies, and gaming platforms, thereby disrupting millions of users. Large-scale traffic floods consume bandwidth, degrade internet services, and can completely sever connectivity in severe cases. The FBI carried out these domain seizures in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, as part of the broader Operation PowerOFF, which targets the infrastructure and operators behind these illegal services.

This multinational initiative, coordinated by Europol, involves authorities across continents and aims to dismantle DDoS-for-hire networks and identify those behind them. While no arrests or charges have been disclosed with this specific action, the ongoing crackdown by U.S. authorities has already led to multiple prosecutions and the seizure of over 100 domains related to DDoS services in the past eight years. Although domain seizures disrupt operations, they do not guarantee the complete elimination of backend servers or prevent operators from reestablishing elsewhere. Nevertheless, this intervention raises operational costs for cybercriminals, preserves critical evidence, and serves as a stern warning that using such services is neither anonymous nor lawful. The FBI emphasizes that engaging in these activities can lead to severe legal consequences under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
