Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has raised concerns about the potential threat that AI-driven mathematical advancements pose to cryptocurrency security. Responding to Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, Buterin highlighted the risks associated with AI's capability to break the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA), widely used to secure cryptocurrency wallets. Drake emphasized that users should consider moving funds to wallets where the public key is not exposed, following recent AI advancements in mathematics by OpenAI. The company demonstrated significant progress by using AI to solve complex mathematical equations, such as the Navier-Stokes equation, in a short period. This rapid advancement has led to concerns that AI could also compromise other cryptographic systems, including those thought to be resistant to quantum attacks, like lattice-based cryptography. Buterin noted that these developments are why Ethereum's roadmap is moving towards a hash-only approach, as AI could potentially weaken even the most robust cryptographic defenses.
