Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally, has confirmed a significant security incident that has led to the suspension of withdrawals. Users reported funds vanishing from the exchange's wallets, prompting Binance to investigate the situation urgently. Although the company assured that user funds remain safe, it advised caution against scams and unauthorized account requests. In response to the breach, Binance spokesperson Ross O'Leary stated that the exchange has paused withdrawals on several networks as a precautionary measure.
The incident follows Binance founder Changpeng Zhao's remarks on social media about a likely hack, though he assured users that their funds would be covered. Despite Zhao's reassurances, the breach's financial impact is severe. According to reports, Circle has frozen $800 million in Tether, while Tether itself has frozen $1.56 billion related to the hack. Crypto analysts suggest that up to $2 billion has been siphoned from Binance's hot wallets, with potential losses reaching $5.7 billion, though these figures are not yet confirmed.
The identity of the hackers remains unknown, and Binance has not disclosed any communication with them. If the breach is confirmed to be in the billions, it would stand as one of the most significant in cryptocurrency history. This incident follows other notable security breaches, such as the 2025 Bybit hack, where $1.4 billion was stolen, allegedly by North Korean hackers. Separately, Polymarket, a prediction market platform, also faced a breach earlier, pausing its operations due to a third-party software compromise, resulting in a $2 million loss.
