Researchers from Singapore's Nanyang Technological University have unveiled a significant set of security vulnerabilities within 4G and 5G core networks. These vulnerabilities, totaling 84, could potentially be exploited to execute denial-of-service attacks and session hijacking. The study, titled 'Understanding Implicit Trust Errors in Core Carrier Networks through Multi-Agent Flaw Discovery and Analysis,' highlights issues within the signaling interfaces of several LTE and 5G implementations. The core problem identified by the researchers is a pattern of implicit trust between core network functions. This trust model, once reliable due to physical isolation, has become fragile with the shift to cloud-native deployments. Consequently, the attack surface has expanded, making it easier for adversaries to access previously secure interfaces. The research identified these vulnerabilities across two main signaling protocols: the GPRS Tunnelling Protocol Control Plane and the Packet Forwarding Control Protocol. A multi-agent system named iFinder, assisted by a large language model, was developed to detect these implicit trust errors, or iTrues. The system categorizes known flaws and discovers new ones by eliminating false positives through a detailed cross-checking technique. Among the vulnerabilities found, 81 have been assigned CVE identifiers, indicating their severity and the need for remediation. Some flaws in 5G systems have inherited vulnerabilities from 4G, raising concerns about security risks transitioning across generations. The potential for attacks increases if attackers can obtain IP addresses and access internal network interfaces. Vendors and network operators are urged to address these vulnerabilities promptly.
