Charter Communications, one of the largest broadband providers in the United States, has become the latest victim of a significant data breach orchestrated by the ShinyHunters extortion group. Known for their voice phishing tactics and swift data exfiltration, ShinyHunters published the stolen data on their Tor-based leak site, suggesting that Charter did not pay the demanded ransom. The breach involves over 42 million customer records, including customer proprietary network information, although analysis by the data breach notification website HaveIBeenPwned indicates that around 4.9 million unique individuals are actually affected. This data comprises names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, as well as 85,000 records linked to employee accounts. Charter Communications, which serves over 30 million residential and business customers, stated that the threat actor only accessed sales tools used for managing customer data and no sensitive customer proprietary network information was compromised. The company is currently following its security protocols and cooperating with authorities to address the situation.
